A long, long time ago the Mayas had a calendar.
Most certainly they could not see into the future towards infinity and had to stop counting somewhere. The last day was 21st December 2012 and because of that decision many many years ago a small collective paranoia started about the world ending this December 21st.
Our prophets of doom came with elaborate theories, the media had a field day with stories about a small village in France that was the only place on earth that would survive and the poor inhabitants had to put up with all sorts of people coming for the show.
In the end here we are. Nothing happened.
The thing that impressed me was the wish that the end would come like an eraser on a bad sketch or a blank piece of paper to write again.
It just wont happen! We will stay for many more years and will have to live with the world we are building and the ever increasing people in it. The sooner we get on with it the better.
Tomorrow the year will end.
For us, using the western calendars, at least. More than half of the world population will not even care about the year change. Some will not know it has changed. Nothing really happens when the year changes. The sun goes down and rises like any normal day.
Years are just guidance for time keeping.
We put way too much hope in the fact that there will be a change just because there is a blank page, a new year starting. Only to soon realize ( usually on the first or second week of the year) that nothing has changed just because we are in a new year.We even celebrate!
Nothing...
Placing hope in new year change is like drinking to forget and waking up with an hangover and still the same problems.
My personal new year resolution is not to have any more new year resolutions. I will have resolutions for every day of the year. Change takes time and effort Change does not need a milestone.
Milestones will come with change.
The first two years of my son are my milestone for 2013 and it does not fit with the new year date. The two years i stopped smoking neither and my third year wedding anniversary either.
Those are my important milestones for 2013. What are yours?
When are you planning on starting making your own calendar?
Well, my advice is : start now, start tomorrow or the next day, but do not ever wait for a specific date or a sign. Make it happen.
I wish that in 2013 we spend less time thinking about what is wrong and more on getting it right. Things will change. With time. In time.
Look for the good things in your life as they are the ones that will make you bear the burden of the bad ones. And they will.
Instead of wishing for a fresh start, lets make a fresh start without throwing all away. The world will not end for us to have another chance at life.
We have that chance every day. Lets take it.
Happy new Year!
